Love is the Common Denominator

Below are brief excerpts I have transcribed from Manly Palmer Hall's lecture on the Sevenfold Mystery of Love-video attached below.

Love is the common denominator in practically everything that is useful in existence.

There is something within each person that reaches our for affection and to bestow it.  This power resides not in the mind nor in the body, but in what we have tentatively termed the Soul.  The Soul is, therefore, the source of the good within ourselves.  And it is also part of the wonder that we have received from our Divine Inheritance.

The Power to Love, the need to be loved have descended from the most remote times. There is no period in which this system of interchange has not been noted and recorded. So the question arises, what is Love?  This is the big question.

Love, seemingly, is not part of any of the academic elements of the personality. Love is part of the princicple which produces life.

Life, in itself, is a manifestation of Love.

And Love, therefore, is that which perpetuates, binds together and which ennobles and deifies. All of the other conduits of the human being. Love becomes, so to say, the Leader of the purposes of Life.

And in our present time we are in the presence of a great need for this.

All Mystics are involved in the Love Mystery.

Phases of Love.

1. Love of God

The Love of God was, according to the ancients, the primary basis of our relationship with the universe.  Whether we consider deity as a person, a principle or an idea that which holds the universe together is this basic concept of essential goodness as the source of existence.

2. Love of Wisdom

Wisdom became the search for the proof of the reality of God

3. Love of Country

Love of patriotic relationship with the Earth, with the land, with our neighbors.  The pride of country based upon the fact that all work together to preserve the honor of country.

It meant to be honest, to follow the rule,s to help the widows and the fatherless.  It helped to protect the natural resources. Ii was the conservation of other forms of life.

4. Love of Light

Light is a symbol.  It is a symbol of Universal insight and understanding.

5. Love of Beauty

Beauty is a mysterious and intangible thing.   Creative expression.

6. Love of Skills

Building for the greater glory of God and the greater good of mankind.

7. Love of Family

Family is a microcosm.

All values in life that are important are based upon the integrities of human relationships.  And these integrities include friendships and family memberships.

Humanity is a family.

Love is a universal energy and cannot be blocked into small patterns.

There cannot be any fulfillment in love if it is dominated entirely by physical consideration.  Love is not basicalloly physical but the physical world is a place where Love can reveal itself in a magnificient way.

All we really need is a universe ruled by Love.  What we don't realize is that's what we've got but we have perverted it.  We have denied it.  We have built another world on illusions which have no substance in ethics or integrity and yet there isn't a single blade of grass that grows or a single tree on a hillside that cannot help us to find the truth if we want it.

Love is a responsibility that we Love truth enough that we obey its rules.  That we Love God enough to Love the other creatures that He has fashioned.  And that we Love our neighbor enough not to be influenced by superficial considerations.  Neither race, nor color nor creed should interfere with the universality of man’s primary respect for life and that in serving life itself we become the faithful stewards in the sanctuaries of truth.

The world is finally a temple.  We are its priests.  And unless we practice its virtues the temple rapidly descends to become a fraudulent institution.  The whole theory is rather clear and simple and I think its rather strong and useful the theory that Love is to help things to grow.  To make them greater and better for their own good.  For the common good.  And that the Lord so Loved the world that he gave his only begotten son. It is up to us to realize and understand that that sacrifice was not in vain.  And that the Love of God for man can be equaled by the Love of man for God.  And when this balance is reached, our world will be much happier and livable place and we will all have time to be our better selves without persecution, misery or suffering.

We will be in trouble until the Soul rules the Body.
